More and more women are entering Foreign Service than before. Today, women do not hesitate to take up postings in foreign countries anymore. In fact, women are interested in traveling to new places thus making the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) an attractive professional option for them. Nirupama Menon Rao is the present Foreign Secretary having recently taken over from Shivshankar Menon in South Block.

She is the second woman foreign secretary, the first one being Chokila Iyer who served in the year 2001. Expectations rise high from the current Foreign Secretary who has a very dynamic persona and has had a lot of experience during her stints in various countries. Very few (at least, amongst the ordinary public) are aware of the fact that Nirupama Rao had not only managed diplomatic relations in innumerable countries very well, she is also a published poet having written a collection of poems titled, ‘Rain Rising.’ She is also a trained classical singer having given public performances in the past. Her education has been widely influenced by the cities she has lived in like Bangalore, Coonoor, Lucknow, Pune and later during her masters in Maharashtra.  She is a topper of the 1973 batch of the Indian Foreign Service.

Nirupama Rao believes that India needs to play a very prominent role in world affairs.

“Economic diplomacy and public diplomacy are also issues that demand increased attention,” she is stated to have said after taking over. With a 36 year long career, Nirupama Rao hopes to put in her best in her current posting as Foreign Secretary. At a time when India needs to play a prominent role in the global political arena, Nirupama Rao’s expertise in her stints in Peru, China, Washington, Moscow and Sri Lanka will definitely come in handy for the country.

This former Indian diplomat serving the External Affairs Ministry is an inspiration to women all over the country. Not only is she an expert in her field of functioning, she also retains her feminity with grace which is obvious in her dressing style and the jewelry that she wears aesthetically. She is married to a senior IAS officer, Sudhakar Rao and is mother to two sons, Nikhilesh and Kartikeya.  And did you know that his foreign secretary can strum the guitar too?  Definitely, an all rounder. Let’s hope her stint as Foreign Secretary brings about healthy constructive changes and improvement in
India’s Foreign affairs.
