Wild life with its amazing multiplicity has always added to human’s inborn love for nature and the vivacity it offers. To have a wholesome treat for this thirst of ours, just travel to the tale end of India, the destination of course is ‘God’s own country’. Kerala the bounty of natural beauty welcomes you to the small town Thekkady at the outskirts of Periyar forest and river. It is in Idukki district and an earthly heaven for anyone with an eye for beauty and a mind to enjoy.

The very word Thekkady denotes dense forests where herds of elephants move around freely, where you can see tigers in all its natural charm and majesty. The mind blowing beauty of the high and low ranges of Western Ghats, the sweet scents of spices harvested there and a memorable boat drive over the peacefully flowing Periyar river  make it complete. Thekkady is a blend of Human innovations and nature’s own refulgence.

The Periyar Wild life sanctuary, the biggest of the kind in India is located in the banks of Periyar Lake. This beautiful lake is an artificial one and the Mullaiperiyar Dam across the lake making the park more attractive .The whole area of the sanctuary is approximately 777 sq. kms of which a major portion is formed as thick forest .It was announced as a Tiger reserve in 1978. The roaming herd of the elephant in close view is a real feast for our eyes. Unlike in many other sanctuaries here rules are being followed strictly which preserves it from trespassing and poaching. All kind of animals are protected and preserved here. You can avail a jeep safari through the dense forest to have glimpses of cheetahs, tigers, bear, deer, and almost all varieties of wild life.

Boat cruise in the Lake is a must and much preferred time pass. You can have a change over with elephant ride and a terrific trekking to the wrecks of Mangala Devi temple. It is an old stone temple much of its beauty being ruined.

Being a land of spices the atmosphere is always flavored with the aroma of the wide spread herbal plantations and tea estates. The government sponsored eco- tours amidst the tea, coffee and spices plantations and factories makes you fresh and relaxed. There you can interact with some tribal clans and see their hamlets. Time passes very fast when they demonstrate their special ways of fishing, herding and bee keeping.

Resorts are another plus point here, as they are built in the midst of forest, a great feel of oneness with nature is the over all impact. If you want to experience more thrill you can even choose to stay in small tree houses, for those who prefer casual stay to luxurious one.

Tour without shopping is like feast without deserts for many, they too have their target met there. Fill your bags with tea packets of different flavors, spices of all kinds, and not to forget the T shirts with the picture of Periyar sanctuary imprinted.

Kumuly is the nearest town, and Madurai and Cochin airports are just 200km away. Kottayam railway station is the immediate access for train travelers. All kind of transportation is there in plenty and an office of Iddiki District Tourist Information centre is there to help and guide.

To get a timely retreat from the day today hubbub of life it is always advisable to elope to such places of fabulous splendor where nature is at her best. It is a tonic to tune you to tackle the tantrum of the tumultuous life.
